My NDIS journey has been incredibly difficult. I originally accessed a support coordinator who wasn’t suited to my needs. At the time, I didn’t realize this, and for seven months, I trusted a lot of misinformation. I wasn’t given real guidance or a clear understanding of how to actually implement my NDIS plan. Eventually, I reached out to May from Innovative Care WA, and it was such a welcome surprise to finally have a support coordinator who practices the principles of trauma-informed care. For the first time, I felt like I had a voice. May actually collaborates with me—not just makes decisions for me—which helps me feel empowered. She brings in mutuality, cultural diversity, a strength-based approach, and supported decision-making—everything that service providers are supposed to offer but so often don’t. After a succession of bad experiences, it would have been easy for her to see me as ‘too hard to work with,’ but instead, she met me where I was at and supported me in a way that actually made sense. I’m so appreciative of her support, and for the first time in a long time, I feel hopeful—hopeful that there are more service providers out there who are genuinely here to provide real support, not just profit from the system.
